The Competition Council awarded a Certificate of Appreciation

(20.10.2016.)

The Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia (the CM) has awarded the Competition Council of Latvia (the CC) a Certificate of appreciation “for effective detection of competition infringements and promotion of fair competition”. This year, the CC is the only state institution receiving the award.

Ms Skaidrīte Ābrama, the Chairwoman of the CC, says: “We are grateful to the CM for the recognition and are delighted that our teamwork has been noticed and appreciated. We have set high goals for ourselves – to avoid market failure and competition distortions created not only by the private sector but also by state and local governments. Only fair and strong competition promotes economic growth and provides benefits to society.”

The main goal of the CC is to give all entrepreneurs possibility to operate in fair competition environment so that consumers have access to better quality goods and services at competitive prices. Therefore, the CC investigates competition infringements, reviews mergers of large enterprises, studies economic development in different markets, as well as educates companies and public bodies on the benefits of fair competition.

According to calculations of the CC, over the past three years detection and prevention of competition infringements has created a welfare gain of EUR 51 million per year.

Work done by the CC has also been recognised internationally. Last year, the CC for the first time in history was included among the top 36 competition authorities in the world and received a 3-star rating from the Global Competition Review. Furthermore, while reviewing the candidacy of Latvia to join the OECD Competition Committee, the OECD recognized the CC as a professional and effective institution.
